Coffee as a Language The Connected Cup Documentary
Coffee and tea act as a cross-cultural means of connection. How can we communicate with others in a global capacity while doing something so small and simple every day? Filmmaker, Brooke Bierhaus, brings viewers along on her journey through 9 countries with interviews in 9 languages in an attempt to connect with the world through a common cup.
Brooke travels to Monteverde, Costa Rica to begin her understanding of coffee production. Meet the sustainable coffee farm, Café de Monteverde. From there Brooke travels to Rome and Venice, Italy to meet with the operators of the oldest coffee house in Europe, Caffe Florian. We travel to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and discuss the ways coffee, tea, and water play a role on the mountain. Ethiopia is the next stop on the journey as the birthplace of coffee. In Ethiopia we visit the Wild Coffee Forest, meet coffee farmers, discuss the coffee ceremony, and visit Lalibela for Ashendiye. Brooke travels to Morocco to interview a Berber nomad who speaks a "dying language" Amizigh. Moroccan Atay tea is served in three rounds as well. India is our next stop as the conversation shifts to chai and hospitality. Brooke is invited in by an Iranian woman in the Himalayas. We leave India for the Japanese countryside where we meet with tea farmers in Wazuka, Obubu Tea Farms. Matcha and the matcha tea ceremonies are important in Japanese culture. Finally Brooke stays with a matriarchal women's village in Samburu, Kenya. The women at Unity tie in how clean water is integral in these "connected cup" moments that Brooke has shared around the world.
